Site-specific, participatory mixed media installation at Lake Traunsee

The Landungsplatz station in Ebensee derails in the Capital of Culture year and becomes a place for tangible, self-determined imagination: a loud invitation to everyone – especially children and their adults – to invent birds and other flying creatures and to counteract their extinction. The internationally renowned Swiss artist couple Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger start a spatial narrative from a bird's eye view, a wondrous beginning whose outcome is open. "vogelfrei" is a site-specific, participatory mixed-media installation made of driftwood, found materials, tools and sound. It offers space up to the ceiling for wondrous creatures that can be conceived and built on site. A project by Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger, conceived by Katharina Lackner and Julia Stoff

Thus, in Ebensee, where many still pursue the intangible cultural heritage of bird trapping, a wild decoy world grows with sneaky turtle doves and shy vultures, organized chickens and dragons in love, cockatoos, hummingbirds and cheeky bullfinches, icy siskins, hungry smacks, award-winning goldfinches, fantastic crossbills, citizen and ebony eagles, impatient alpine parrots, well-traveled gallows birds and generous magpies, zizibes, birigös and more undiscovered enthusiasts.

The former restaurant becomes a centre of anarchic, ornithological diversity. The place does not yet know what it will look like in the end, but is curious about the uncontrolled ideas of its visitors. From a generous range of found and local materials, a lively, walkable and playable installation is created that amazes and encourages people to try it out. Because: If you want birds, you need the courage to go wild.

Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger

Since 1997, Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger have been creating immersive in-situ installations together. Transformation, proliferation and crystallization function as full-fledged components of their work, which transforms according to the chemical reactions that develop in it. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in a fantastic vegetative universe or take part in experiments that awaken their senses and mind. The artists' installations, as unsettling as they are enchanting, weave connections between antagonistic worlds and propose to observe the strange laboratory of the living with its biodiversity and to question notions of fertility and growth.
