Contemporary ceramic art: An exhibition of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 on feminism, radicalism and vulnerability in the course of the "City of Ceramics" project at the Kunsthaus Blaue Butter in the Kunstquartier Stadtgarten Gmunden

Strong female positions determine the departure and the breaking of established conventions in ceramic art. This goes back to a long tradition: While female artists were long discriminated against in the male-dominated art world and excluded from art education, at the beginning of the 20th century they began to occupy the very niches that were left to them at that time. These were initially materials and techniques with "feminine" connotations such as textiles, graphics and ceramics. The raw material clay inspired the pioneers, they experimented with the material and artists continue to push it to its limits and beyond to this day. The exhibition Radical Feminine – Radically Feminine – curated by Genoveva Rückert and Veronika Schreck, curators of OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH and the Academy of Ceramics Gmunden – takes a look at the feminine in ceramic art. In the sense of the word root – in Latin radix – root, origin, source, the arc spans from prehistory to radical approaches in contemporary art. From one of the oldest known depictions of women to important positions of the 20th century to the present day, the feminine and figurative aspects of women themselves are shown, as well as strong feminist attitudes. While the male view of the naked female body had long prevailed, the ceramic artists of the time conquered the view of the feminine themselves at the turn of the century. The Austrian ceramic artists Emilie Schleiss-Simandl (1880–1962), Susi Singer (1891–1955), Ida Schwetz-Lehmann (1883–1971 AT), Gudrun Baudisch-Wittke (1907–1982) and later Annerose Riedl (DE/AT) show their view of the feminine and nudity. The work by Johannes Schweiger (AT) on the Austrian Lucie Rie (1902–1995) also includes the Jewish ceramist who fled to London after the Anschluss of Austria, as well as Maud Friedland (1927–1996 AT/IL). Also on display are contemporary art positions by: Julia Beliaeva (UA), Alexandra Engelfriet (NL/FR), Esra Gülmen (TR/DE), Maria Kulikovska (UA), Kris Lemsalu (EE/AT), Linda Luse (LV/AT), Laura Põld (EE), and Chin Tsao (TW). This synopsis, supplemented by greats from recent art history such as Kiki Kogelnik (1935–1997 AT/US), impressively shows the uniqueness, power and radicality of female creativity and the potential of ceramics as a material. After "All About the Vessel", "Radical Feminine" is the second exhibition at the Kunsthaus Blaue Butter, which opened at the beginning of May in the Kunstquartier Stadtgarten Gmunden.
